Am I the Only One Expecting More from the Barbie Movie?

Why I Expected More

With many people online and at work talking about seeing the Barbie movie and raving about it, I had to see why that was.

Since the name of the movie is Barbie, I was expecting the stereotypical Barbie played more of protagonist role. I felt she gave up midway through the movie and had other characters like Gloria and Sasha take the initiative.

I understand that stereotypical Barbie is going through an existential crisis and does not have much real world experience, but come on Barbie, let’s go Barbie!

The movie lacked substance. Most of the focus of the movie was on musicals, flashbacks, and the beautiful pink Barbie set. I wasn’t able to get to know characters and see them develop as individuals.

There was more telling than showing. It was not like the movie Freaky Friday where we get to see the mom and daughter literally walk a day in each other’s shoes and learn and mature from that experience.

If you’ve read this far, thanks for reading! If you watched the Barbie movie, I am curious what your thoughts are of the movie.
