This past weekend a man at the shop asked if I was in high school. I said no, I was in high school a long time ago. He didn’t end the conversation there. He then asked me how old I was and what my plans were with or after college.

I am not sure what makes him thinks I’m in my teens or even early 20s. I had a surgical mask on. Was it the way I dressed or carried myself? Should I be insulted or flattered that he thinks I’m in my teens or even early 20s?

I didn’t answer him. Even if he was just making small talk, I thought to myself, isn’t is rude to ask a woman her age? If this unwritten rule exist, he is clearly oblivious to it.

Why take offense, and why the obsession to hide a woman’s age?

Age is just a number, right? Yes, but as a woman ages, her fertility declines. Not only that, her hair starts turning grey, and she might start getting wrinkles and bags under her eyes.
