Is Worth Arbitrary?

What Defines Worth?

Yesterday my mom asked me why one violin cost more than the other when they essentially all look the same.

Aside from the brand name, I can think of 2 things off of my head such as expensive strings and bridge that can bring the price of a violin up.

What if we have two violins with the same brand name? Why is one priced more than the other?

I am not an appraiser, so I find myself looking at violins superficially. I take a look at the label and condition.

The label may contain the identifiers such as brand, origin, and year that I can search online to see the violin’s worth.

Even with objective data, worth can be subjective.

A violin that is in poorer condition is worth less. How much less is dependent on the seller and maybe the buyer if they are able to negotiate.

In addition to the cost of materials, cost of labor is probably factored into the violin’s worth.
