I tried the free version of Grammarly for the first time, and here is what I think.
Grammarly does a good job with identifying small grammatical errors such as pointing out where there’s an unnecessary comma or where it should be “an” instead of “a” before a vowel word.
When my writing submission contained more than just spelling or small grammatical errors, Grammarly failed to offer good suggestions. In that case, rather than accepting Grammarly’s suggestion, I ended up having to re-write the sections that did not made sense.
Grammarly’s flaw is understandable. Grammarly was programmed to understand and convey rules. It is not human. Grammarly does not understand the writer’s intent. It just offers suggestion based off of programmed rules.
Keeping that in mind, I think it is fine to use Grammarly as a writing tool if it is treated like a simple spell or grammar check. Beyond that, the writer needs to determine if the suggestion should be accepted.
If you read this far, thanks for reading! Have you tried Grammarly? What are your thoughts on Grammarly?
