I’m not talking about Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I have a dream’ speech.

This past week I’ve had a couple instances where I dreamed.

Why do we dream?

There are some theories.

  1. We dream to fulfill our desires.

In the early 1900s, Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist, believed that all of our dreams including our nightmares are collections of images from our daily conscious lives and that they also have symbolic meanings which relate to the fulfillment of our subconscious desires.

Freud theorized that everything we remember when we wake from a dream symbolizes our unconscious primitive thought such as urges and desires.

Freud believed that by analyzing those remembered components, the unconscious content will be revealed to our conscious mind and psychological issues caused from its repression could be addressed and resolved.

2. We dream to remember.
