Why I Stopped Loving Birthdays as Much

Growing up, I loved birthdays.

My birthday is the day I get to invite my friends over, celebrate me, eat cake, and open presents. When my friends had their birthdays, it’s also as fun to come over to their place, celebrate them, eat cake, and see them open presents.

It’s also the only time to catch up and hang out for a few hours every year since we all went to different schools after the 6th grade.

This annual birthday celebration then stopped being an annual tradition after we went to high school.

We stopped celebrating with each other on our birthdays. We instead kept in touch, did small talk, and say happy birthday by writing on each other’s Myspace and then later Facebook wall.

Birthdays have not been the same since then.

Today is my best friend from grade school’s birthday.

I think the last time we hung out was at the park when I was either 19 or 20. Her friend from high school, my friend from high school, another friend (who is also her friend) from grade school, and my roommate from college showed up. We talked and played 2 truths and 1 lie to get to know one another.

I eventually left Facebook, and we lost touch, because after I turned 21, I did not want to celebrate any more birthdays.
