Deciding What to Give Up
Life does not offer unlimited time and money. At one point in our life, we have to decide what to give up.
Even if we have some time and money to spare, we don’t want to hoard and be wasteful. We have to be strategic about how we spend our time and money.
We can start by determining if it’s a need or want. This can be done by asking ourselves, “can I live without this?” If yes, then it’s a want rather than a need.
Of course, we can try to justify a want as a need, because it sparks joy.
Just because something sparks joy, it does not mean it is a need.
We have to ask why. We didn’t have it before. What will change after we get it?
Way back when I had Facebook, I gave up Facebook for 40+ days. That culture of connecting and oversharing that Facebook embraced was addicting.
I can relate to Attila Vágó’s “I Stopped Using (Facebook), and it Feels Great” story. It was a time waster to spend all that time on Facebook posting, reading, commenting, and liking. Why did I need to do all that? Did I need all that likes and comments for self-validation? Did I need to fit in by constantly stay connected with my acquaintances?
